Electrical Problems & Troubleshooting

  • Why does my breaker keep tripping?

    ANSWER: A breaker may repeatedly trip because of an overloaded circuit, short circuit, ground fault, damaged wiring, failing equipment, or a defective breaker. Because the breaker is designed to protect the circuit from unsafe conditions, repeated tripping should be investigated instead of continually reset.  


    WHAT YOU MAY NEED: Electrical troubleshooting, circuit repair, breaker replacement, or a new dedicated circuit.  

  • Why did I lose power to one room if no breaker is tripped?

    ANSWER: A loss of power without an obviously tripped breaker can be caused by a tripped GFCI, loose electrical connection, damaged receptacle, wiring problem, or a breaker that has tripped internally without looking fully OFF.  


    WHAT YOU MAY NEED: Electrical troubleshooting to identify where power is being interrupted.  

  • Why are my lights flickering?

    ANSWER: Flickering can come from something as simple as an LED bulb or dimmer compatibility issue, but it can also point to loose connections, voltage fluctuations, overloaded circuits, or an electrical service problem. Flickering that affects several rooms or happens frequently deserves additional attention.  


    WHAT YOU MAY NEED: Lighting, circuit, or electrical service troubleshooting.  

  • Why do my lights dim when the HVAC or another large appliance turns on?

    ANSWER: Large electrical loads can create a brief voltage drop when they start. Minor momentary dimming may occur, but significant or prolonged dimming can indicate voltage drop, loose connections, equipment problems, or inadequate electrical capacity.  


    WHAT YOU MAY NEED: Circuit testing, service evaluation, or equipment electrical troubleshooting.  

  • Why is my electrical outlet hot?

    ANSWER: An outlet should not normally become noticeably hot. Heat can result from a loose connection, damaged receptacle, excessive load, poor connection, or failing equipment plugged into the outlet.  


    WHAT YOU MAY NEED: Receptacle replacement and electrical circuit inspection.  

  • Why do I smell a burning or fishy odor near an outlet or panel?

    ANSWER: Unusual burning or fishy odors can come from overheating wiring, loose connections, failing breakers, damaged receptacles, lighting components, or other electrical equipment. A persistent electrical odor should not be ignored.  


    WHAT YOU MAY NEED: Prompt electrical troubleshooting to locate the source of overheating.  

  • Why is my electrical panel buzzing?

    ANSWER: Some electrical equipment can make a faint operational hum, but loud buzzing, crackling, popping, excessive heat, or a burning smell can indicate loose connections, arcing, failing breakers, or other electrical problems.  


    WHAT YOU MAY NEED: Electrical panel inspection and troubleshooting.  

  • Why do my electrical problems happen when it rains?

    ANSWER: Moisture can enter outdoor receptacles, fixtures, boxes, conduit, damaged wiring, or connected equipment and cause GFCIs or breakers to trip. Coastal environments can make moisture-related problems more common because equipment is also exposed to salt and corrosion.  


    WHAT YOU MAY NEED: Outdoor electrical troubleshooting and repair or replacement of damaged weather-resistant equipment.  

  • My outlet sparked when I plugged something in. Is that dangerous?

    ANSWER: A very small, brief spark can sometimes occur as a plug makes contact under load, but repeated, large, or unusual sparking can indicate a worn receptacle, loose connection, damaged plug, or electrical fault. Heat, discoloration, burning smells, or continued sparking should be evaluated.

  • How do I know if my electrical panel needs to be replaced?

    ANSWER: Common reasons for panel replacement include age, corrosion, physical damage, overheating, unavailable replacement components, known problematic equipment, insufficient capacity, or plans to add significant new electrical loads.  


    WHAT YOU MAY NEED: Electrical panel evaluation, panel replacement, or service upgrade.  

  • What is a Federal Pacific electrical panel?

    ANSWER: Federal Pacific Electric panels, particularly certain Stab-Lok systems, are older electrical panels that electricians frequently recommend evaluating because of documented concerns associated with some of their breakers and equipment.  


    WHAT YOU MAY NEED: A Federal Pacific panel evaluation and, depending on its condition and configuration, panel replacement.  

  • Do I need a 200-amp electrical service?

    ANSWER: Not every home requires 200 amps. Electrical service size depends on the calculated electrical load of the home, including HVAC, appliances, water heating, EV charging, pools, spas, and other major equipment. A load calculation is the best way to determine whether the existing service has sufficient capacity.  


    WHAT YOU MAY NEED: Electrical load calculation, service evaluation, or service upgrade.  

  • Can I add more breakers if my electrical panel is full?

    ANSWER: Possibly. Depending on the panel, approved tandem breakers, a subpanel, load management, or a larger panel may provide additional options. Available physical breaker spaces and available electrical capacity are two different things, so both should be evaluated.  


    WHAT YOU MAY NEED: Panel evaluation, breaker reconfiguration, subpanel installation, or panel upgrade.  

  • Is it normal for a circuit breaker to feel warm?

    ANSWER: Some warmth can occur under electrical load, but a breaker that is unusually hot, smells burnt, shows discoloration, or repeatedly trips should be evaluated. Excessive heat can indicate an overloaded circuit, poor connection, or failing component.

  • What is whole-home surge protection?

    ANSWER: A whole-home surge protective device is installed at or near the electrical service or panel to help limit transient voltage surges before they reach equipment throughout the home.  


    WHAT YOU MAY NEED: Whole-home surge protector installation.  

  • Does a whole-home surge protector protect against lightning?

    ANSWER: Surge protection can help reduce damage from certain voltage surges, including surges associated with nearby lightning events, but no surge protector can guarantee protection from every lightning event or a direct strike.  


    WHAT YOU MAY NEED: Whole-home surge protection along with properly maintained grounding and bonding  

  • How long does an electrical panel last?

    ANSWER: There is no single expiration date for an electrical panel. Condition, environment, manufacturer, maintenance, corrosion, heat damage, and the home's electrical demands all matter. Older equipment should be evaluated when problems appear or when major loads are being added.  


    WHAT YOU MAY NEED: Electrical panel condition and capacity evaluation.  

Outlets, GFCIs & Switches

  • Why won't my GFCI outlet reset?

    ANSWER: A GFCI may refuse to reset if there is no incoming power, another upstream device has tripped, moisture or a ground fault is present, wiring is damaged or the GFCI itself has failed.  


    WHAT YOU MAY NEED: GFCI and circuit troubleshooting or GFCI replacement.    

  • Why does my outdoor GFCI trip when it rains?

    ANSWER: Moisture entering a receptacle, electrical box, cover, fixture, cord, or connected equipment can create leakage current that causes the GFCI to trip.  


    WHAT YOU MAY NEED: Outdoor electrical troubleshooting and replacement or repair of compromised weather-resistant equipment.  

  • Can one GFCI protect multiple outlets?

    ANSWER: Yes. A properly wired GFCI receptacle or GFCI breaker can provide protection to additional downstream outlets on the same circuit.  


    WHAT YOU MAY NEED: GFCI testing or circuit evaluation if multiple outlets unexpectedly lose power.  

  • Why did all of my bathroom outlets stop working?

    ANSWER: Multiple bathroom outlets may be protected by the same GFCI device or circuit. A tripped GFCI located in another bathroom, garage, exterior area, or other location may interrupt power to downstream receptacles.  


    WHAT YOU MAY NEED: GFCI reset, replacement, or circuit troubleshooting.  

  • Can you add an electrical outlet to an existing wall?

    ANSWER: Usually. An electrician may be able to extend an appropriate nearby circuit or install a new circuit. Accessibility through attics, crawlspaces, cabinets, and wall framing determines how the wiring can be routed and whether drywall access is necessary.  


    WHAT YOU MAY NEED: Additional receptacle installation or a new dedicated circuit.  

  • Can an electrician add an outlet without cutting drywall?

    ANSWER: Sometimes. Attic, crawlspace, cabinet, or nearby electrical access can make it possible to fish wiring through finished walls. Fire blocking, insulation, framing, and the desired location may still require some drywall access.  


    WHAT YOU MAY NEED: Receptacle installation with wiring routed from an existing or new circuit.  

  • Why is my light switch hot?

    ANSWER: Some electronic dimmers can feel slightly warm, but excessive heat at a standard switch or unusually hot electrical equipment can indicate excessive load, loose connections, damaged components, or improper installation.  


    WHAT YOU MAY NEED: Switch replacement or electrical troubleshooting.  

  • Do outdoor outlets need to be weather resistant?

    ANSWER: Outdoor receptacles and covers must be selected and installed for the location and exposure conditions. The exact equipment and protection required depend on where the receptacle is installed and how exposed it is to weather.

  • When should an electrician get involved in a new home build?

    ANSWER: Electrical planning should begin well before rough-in. Early involvement allows homeowners and builders to coordinate service size, lighting, receptacles, appliances, generators, EV charging, outdoor spaces, cabinetry, and future electrical needs.  


    WHAT YOU MAY NEED: Electrical design consultation and new-construction electrical planning.  

  • What should I think about during my electrical walkthrough?

    ANSWER: Think beyond minimum electrical requirements. Consider furniture placement, bedside charging, kitchen appliances, televisions, outdoor living, holiday lighting, landscape lighting, EV charging, generators, workshops, future pools, and how each room will actually be used.  


    WHAT YOU MAY NEED: Electrical walkthrough and customized electrical layout.  

  • What happens during electrical rough-in?

    ANSWER: During rough-in, electrical boxes, wiring, circuits, and other required components are installed before walls and ceilings are closed. This is when much of the home's electrical infrastructure is created.  


    WHAT YOU MAY NEED: Complete electrical rough-in coordinated with the construction schedule.  

  • What should I prewire during new construction?

    ANSWER: Common future-proofing considerations include generators, EV chargers, outdoor kitchens, detached buildings, landscape lighting, televisions, specialty lighting, pools, hot tubs, and other equipment that may be added later.  


    WHAT YOU MAY NEED: Future electrical pathways, dedicated circuits, conduit, or prewiring.  

  • Should I prewire for a generator even if I'm not buying one yet?

    ANSWER: If a standby generator is likely in the future, planning during construction can simplify the eventual installation and reduce disruption to finished areas.  


    WHAT YOU MAY NEED: Generator transfer-switch preparation, conduit, wiring pathways, or other generator provisions.  

  • When should electrical work happen during a kitchen remodel?

    ANSWER: Electrical planning should happen before cabinetry and finishes are finalized. Appliance requirements, island or peninsula receptacles, lighting, under-cabinet lighting, dedicated circuits, and cabinetry details can all affect the electrical design.  


    WHAT YOU MAY NEED: Remodel electrical design, circuit installation, lighting, and receptacle modifications.  

  • Can you add electrical work during a finished-home renovation?

    ANSWER: Yes. Existing homes can often be modified for new lighting, receptacles, circuits, appliances, and remodeled spaces. The amount of access required depends on the existing wiring, framing, attic or crawlspace access, and the scope of the renovation.
