Why does my breaker keep tripping?
ANSWER: A breaker may repeatedly trip because of an overloaded circuit, short circuit, ground fault, damaged wiring, failing equipment, or a defective breaker. Because the breaker is designed to protect the circuit from unsafe conditions, repeated tripping should be investigated instead of continually reset.

Why did I lose power to one room if no breaker is tripped?
ANSWER: A loss of power without an obviously tripped breaker can be caused by a tripped GFCI, loose electrical connection, damaged receptacle, wiring problem, or a breaker that has tripped internally without looking fully OFF.

Why are my lights flickering?
ANSWER: Flickering can come from something as simple as an LED bulb or dimmer compatibility issue, but it can also point to loose connections, voltage fluctuations, overloaded circuits, or an electrical service problem. Why do my lights dim when the HVAC or another large appliance turns on?
ANSWER: Large electrical loads can create a brief voltage drop when they start. Minor momentary dimming may occur, but significant or prolonged dimming can indicate voltage drop, loose connections, equipment problems, or inadequate electrical capacity.

Why is my electrical outlet hot?

Why do I smell a burning or fishy odor near an outlet or panel?

Why is my electrical panel buzzing?

Why do my electrical problems happen when it rains?

My outlet sparked when I plugged something in. Is that dangerous?
ANSWER: A very small, brief spark can sometimes occur as a plug makes contact under load, but repeated, large, or unusual sparking can indicate a worn receptacle, loose connection, damaged plug, or electrical fault. Heat, discoloration, burning smells, or continued sparking should be evaluated.

How do I know if my electrical panel needs to be replaced?
ANSWER: Common reasons for panel replacement include age, corrosion, physical damage, overheating, unavailable replacement components, known problematic equipment, insufficient capacity, or plans to add significant new electrical loads.

What is a Federal Pacific electrical panel?
ANSWER: Federal Pacific Electric panels, particularly certain Stab-Lok systems, are older electrical panels that electricians frequently recommend evaluating because of documented concerns associated with some of their breakers and equipment.

Do I need a 200-amp electrical service?
ANSWER: Not every home requires 200 amps. Electrical service size depends on the calculated electrical load of the home, including HVAC, appliances, water heating, EV charging, pools, spas, and other major equipment. A load calculation is the best way to determine whether the existing service has sufficient capacity.

Can I add more breakers if my electrical panel is full?
ANSWER: Possibly. Depending on the panel, approved tandem breakers, a subpanel, load management, or a larger panel may provide additional options. Available physical breaker spaces and available electrical capacity are two different things, so both should be evaluated.

Is it normal for a circuit breaker to feel warm?

What is whole-home surge protection?
ANSWER: A whole-home surge protective device is installed at or near the electrical service or panel to help limit transient voltage surges before they reach equipment throughout the home.

Does a whole-home surge protector protect against lightning?
ANSWER: Surge protection can help reduce damage from certain voltage surges, including surges associated with nearby lightning events, but no surge protector can guarantee protection from every lightning event or a direct strike.

How long does an electrical panel last?
ANSWER: There is no single expiration date for an electrical panel. Condition, environment, manufacturer, maintenance, corrosion, heat damage, and the home's electrical demands all matter. Older equipment should be evaluated when problems appear or when major loads are being added.

Outlets, GFCIs & Switches
Why won't my GFCI outlet reset?
ANSWER: A GFCI may refuse to reset if there is no incoming power, another upstream device has tripped, moisture or a ground fault is present, wiring is damaged or the GFCI itself has failed.

Why does my outdoor GFCI trip when it rains?
ANSWER: Moisture entering a receptacle, electrical box, cover, fixture, cord, or connected equipment can create leakage current that causes the GFCI to trip.

Can one GFCI protect multiple outlets?
ANSWER: Yes. A properly wired GFCI receptacle or GFCI breaker can provide protection to additional downstream outlets on the same circuit.

Why did all of my bathroom outlets stop working?
ANSWER: Multiple bathroom outlets may be protected by the same GFCI device or circuit. A tripped GFCI located in another bathroom, garage, exterior area, or other location may interrupt power to downstream receptacles.

Can you add an electrical outlet to an existing wall?
ANSWER: Usually. An electrician may be able to extend an appropriate nearby circuit or install a new circuit. Accessibility through attics, crawlspaces, cabinets, and wall framing determines how the wiring can be routed and whether drywall access is necessary.

Why do my LED lights flicker?
ANSWER: LED flickering can be caused by incompatible dimmers, poor-quality lamps or drivers, loose connections, voltage fluctuations, overloaded circuits, or electrical service problems.

Can recessed lighting be added to an existing ceiling?

What size generator do I need for my house?

What is an automatic transfer switch?

Can I prewire my new house for a generator?

Can a generator run my air conditioner?
